City Head cancelled

 -  posted on 29/12/07

Due to a lot of bad luck and bad timing, City Head for 2008 has been cancelled.

We tried to get a venue in time for registration for the 08 Melbourne International Comedy Festival, but to no avail. Our options were limited, as Naomi plans to head to Perth in the middle of the festival season. Applications for festival-run venues and for Trades Hall were denied, and we were offered the use of Swinburne's space literally 10 minutes after the festival registration had closed.

We changed tacks and applied for the One Van festival in the Blue Mountains, but unfortunately, we would not find out til February if we got accepted or not: hardly enough time to plan for the end-of-April event.

So City Head has been (yet again) put on hold, though it's doubtful that it will be performed again. (See Naomi's blog at www.puppetsinmelbourne.com.au for more info)

Thanks to all the interested parties who auditioned, as well as the three chosen cast members: Hannah Camilleri, Sean Bryan, and Jarrod Fairclough. Also thanks to Penelope Efthimiadis, who was to be costume designer for the show, as part of Naomi's Bump In Project.

New website

If you've been following us from site to site, you'll realise we've had three different sites over the past four years. Here's the reasons for the changes: Artsblogs.com was our humble beginnings. This was way back when Naomi didn't know much about web design or coding (she's the ones who takes care of the site). Artsblogs was great, but didn't do nearly as much as we'd liked. It wasn't wonderful for uploading photos, having separate pages, or allowed a lot of flexibility in design. So Naomi moved the site over to Freewebs.com, having discovered the ease of its quick sitebuilder editors and great-looking templates.

But over the past year, Freewebs has provided a lot of instable changes to their hosting, as well as increased costs for not a lot more functionality. In fact, in the past two years, Naomi has learned a great deal of web design and coding, and has outgrown their 1-2-3 sitebuilders. More importantly, she's discovered just how limited having a site at Freewebs is.

And so Naomi moved the SAL site here, where she can host it on the back of her blog: this means more flexibility to do what we want with the SAL site without worrying too much about increased bills; more designs and templates; a simple and easy-to-use blogging system that runs across the entire site; and plenty of other options, including mailing list features, email forms, galleries, logins for private areas, RSS feeds, and best of all, no worries about running out of pages and webspace.

So here the SAL site will stay. No more free web hosting for us!

Please see our Employment page for more information.

The puppets from City Head have been used for an online advertising campaign for a new web site, collectZing.com - you can see the video here, and read more about the video and the history behind it here.

We're very excited to see Naomi's puppets in their very first film!

I've finally gotten around to posting the video (an excerpt of it anyway) of City Head on Youtube. You can view it here.

No news... is good news!

There's currently no news. I have been particularly weighed down at work, with a number of pretty large deadlines due around the same time as the Fringe. So City Head is on hold until next year's Comedy Festival. (Unfortunately :( )

Meanwhile, I'm still posting stuff on my Puppets in Melbourne blog, which you can find at www.thepromptcopy.com/pip.

No news?

You may notice that the news blog isn't updated much. Unfortunately, most of the Sticky Apple Legs updates have been going into my blog on a different site. It's too much hassle to update both, so I may end up converging the two… Haven't decided yet. In the meantime, please read all the news and updates at:

Tom's a winner!

Great news! Our playwright for City Head has just won another award!

Tom and his friend, Simon Barlow, has won an award for their short musical at the inaugural Short and Sweet Musical competition.

And they both appear in the 26/2/07 edition of Melbourne's Herald Sun newspaper. Congrats to both of them - we hope they continue to create award-winning plays!

In the meantime, please browse our new site and be sure to bookmark it! (This blog post is an archive from our old site)

(And if you've managed to read this post, you get a bonus hint - Puppets in Melbourne blog features behind-the-scenes pics and info on City Head's puppets)

All the best,
